Minimoog Model D Makes a Triumphant Return to Production at the Moog Factory

First unveiled in 1970, the Minimoog Model D revolutionized the music landscape, setting the standard for all future synthesizers. This fully analog instrument garnered praise for merging the robust sound of the 1960s Moog modular synthesizers with the user-friendliness of pre-wired modules. This meant musicians could dive in and play without fussing over patch cables. Pioneering in its design, the Minimoog was rapidly adopted by a myriad of artists, including Herbie Hancock, Kraftwerk, Jan Hammer, Sun Ra, Giorgio Moroder, Parliament Funkadelic, Pink Floyd, and Gary Numan, each crafting distinct sonics and carving out fresh musical paths.

Over five decades later, the Minimoog Model D has resumed production at Moog’s Asheville, North Carolina facility. A seminal piece in sonic innovation and arguably one of the most cherished synthesizers ever conceived, it stands ready to ignite the passions of the next wave of electronic maestros.

A SOUND FOR THE AGES: MODEL D’S HALF-CENTURY LEGACY

With a rich history spanning 52 years, the Minimoog Model D remains a pivotal chapter in musical lore, continually motivating artists across all styles, backgrounds, and ages.

It electrified the realms of funk and disco in the 1970s, provided the foundation for the new wave movement of the 1980s, underscored the rhythms of techno and hip-hop in the 1990s, and has cut across various musical genres since the new millennium dawned. Today, its sounds are as universal in music as vocals.

Over the decades, this iconic instrument has been at the fingertips of music’s trailblazers. Bernie Worrell harnessed its power to forge Parliament Funkadelic’s avant-garde beats. Kraftwerk turned to Model D for their groundbreaking “Autobahn” album, birthing an entire electronic music genre. Gary Numan swapped traditional guitars for Minimoogs, laying the groundwork for industrial music. Its signature sounds echo in tracks from Bob Marley’s “Catch a Fire” to David Bowie’s “Low” and even Dr. Dre’s “The Chronic.”

Moreover, the Minimoog Model D has graced the recordings and stages alongside industry giants such as Devo, Chaka Kahn, Frank Zappa, Giorgio Moroder, Nine Inch Nails, Kate Bush, Ozzy Osbourne, Pink Floyd, Portishead, Rush, Jan Hammer, Phil Collins, Beastie Boys, Radiohead, Herbie Hancock, Sun Ra, and Paul McCartney.
