Yellowjackets: Recollecting Season 1 for a Smoother Experience in Season 2

Here’s a refresher on what Shauna, Taissa, Misty, Nat, and the rest were up to last season.

It’s been over a year since “Yellowjackets,” also known as your favorite show about teen soccer players who become cannibals, ended its gripping first season with a series of major cliffhangers. In the flashbacks, we see the Yellowjackets soccer team caught in cult-like mischief while stranded in the wilderness; in the present day, decapitated heads have shockingly appeared in the basement of one of the former players, with multiple murders adding to the mystery. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Need a recap before diving into Season 2, premiering on March 26th on Showtime? We’ve got you covered. Here’s a snapshot of where we left all of “Yellowjackets'” main characters at the end of Season 1, spanning both the 1990s storyline and the present day.

Shauna Shipman (Sophie Nélisse, Melanie Lynskey)

Where Young Shauna Ends Season 1: Throughout most of Season 1, Shauna (Nélisse) carries a significant secret: she has been involved with her best friend Jackie’s (Ella Purnell) boyfriend and is pregnant with his child. In the season’s final moments, Jackie discovers the truth, resulting in a fiery argument that ends with Jackie sleeping outside.

Come morning, Shauna is heartbroken to discover that Jackie has frozen to death. Will the tragic loss of her best friend intensify her drive to escape the woods? Or will it draw her closer to a darker path?

Where Adult Shauna Ends Season 1: Adult Shauna (Melanie Lynskey) finds herself in a tight spot as Season 1 closes. She murders Adam (Peter Gadiot), the man she was unfaithfully involved with, suspecting he was blackmailing her about her wilderness past. But after taking his life, Shauna learns that the real blackmailer was actually—brace for it—her financially desperate husband.

In spite of this twist, Shauna lets her fellow former Yellowjackets—Taissa (Tawny Cypress), Natalie (Juliette Lewis), and Misty (Christine Ricci)—believe that Adam was indeed the blackmailer, all in a bid to shield herself and her family. Can she maintain this deception? Only time will tell.

Taissa Turner (Jasmin Savoy Brown, Tawny Cypress)

Where Young Taissa Ends Season 1: Desperate to escape the wilderness, Taissa (Savoy Brown) guides a group of teens away from their base camp in search of help. Their mission is tragically cut short when her girlfriend, Van (Liv Hewson), is assaulted by a wolf. Will Taissa be the one to lead the teens to safety out of the woods?

Where Adult Taissa Ends Season 1: Of all the characters in “Yellowjackets”, adult Taissa (Tawny Cypress) might have the most intense Season 1 cliffhanger. Now a successful politician running for the senate, Taissa’s seemingly flawless life is far from perfect. At night, she is tormented by terrifying hallucinations and has developed a peculiar habit of eating dirt.
In the final episode of the season, Taissa wins her senate race, but her personal life begins to unravel. In their basement, her wife Simone (Rukiya Bernard) stumbles upon a chilling collection of objects, including their decapitated dog’s head and a few of their son Sammy’s (Aiden Stoxx) dolls, which have been dismembered. Season 2 is poised to delve into the aftermath of her unsettling actions and perhaps reveal what happened to Taissa in the wilderness that led her to such a fragile mental state as an adult.

Misty Quigley (Samantha Hanratty, Christina Ricci)

Where Young Misty Ends Season 1: One of the most unpredictable characters in “Yellowjackets”, teenage Misty (Henratty) concludes Season 1 on a dramatic note—namely, by drugging the entire soccer team, partially to get closer to her unrequited crush, assistant coach Ben (Steven Kreuger). Under the influence, the girls attempt a violent assault on Travis (Kelvin Alves), but Natalie (Sophie Thatcher) intervenes just in time. It’s likely that this is just the beginning of young Misty’s mischief.

Where Adult Misty Ends Season 1: Spoiler alert: adult Misty (Christina Ricci) is still quite the troublemaker. Involved in the early efforts to identify the blackmailer, she willingly assists Shauna, Taissa, and Natalie in disposing of Adam’s body.
Simultaneously, she’s holding a woman named Jessica (Rekha Sharma) captive in her basement (a classic Misty move) after Jessica discloses that Taissa hired her to investigate the surviving Yellowjackets. At season’s end, Misty releases Jessica, who then collapses from poisoning just after exiting. How will Misty handle knowing that Taissa is investigating her? More significantly, what else might she be capable of?

Natalie Scatorccio (Sophie Thatcher, Juliette Lewis)

Where Young Nat Ends Season 1: Nat stands out as the member of the Yellowjackets who seems to most enjoy the time stranded in the wilderness—at least initially—because she finds a romantic connection with Travis. However, trouble strikes when Jackie reveals to Travis that Nat previously slept with his tormentor, Bobby. Travis ends their relationship as a result, and it remains uncertain whether he will forgive her.
Given Nat’s persistent effort to solve his murder years later, it seems likely that their relationship will continue to evolve in some manner. After all, Season 1 concludes with them searching for Travis’s younger brother, Javi (Luciano Leroux), in the woods—a setting where, as we’ve seen, pivotal events are prone to unfold.

Where Adult Nat Ends Season 1: Throughout most of Season 1 of “Yellowjackets,” adult Nat (Juliette Lewis) is consumed with unraveling the mystery surrounding Travis’s abrupt death. After successfully blackmailing a bank teller, she uncovers a startling fact: Lottie emptied all the money from Travis’s account. We all desperately need answers, and if anyone can unearth them, it’s Nat.

Lottie Matthews (Courtney Eaton, Simone Kessell)

Where Young Lottie Ends Season 1: I think it’s safe to say we’re all a bit concerned about young Lottie (Eaton). Diagnosed with schizophrenia and swiftly running out of her medication after being stranded in the wilderness, she concludes Season 1 with some alarming behavior: she kills a bear, removes its heart, and presents that heart as an offering to a mysterious forest entity. Could this offering mark the onset of the cannibalism that “Yellowjackets” alluded to early in the season?

Where Adult Lottie Ends Season 1: At this juncture, adult Lottie (Kessell) might be the biggest wildcard in “Yellowjackets.” We haven’t actually been introduced to her yet, but the dramatic disclosure that she emptied Travis’s bank account hints at a significant role for her in Season 2. Did she murder Travis to prevent her secrets from surfacing? Only time will tell.

Travis Martinez (Kevin Alves)

Where Young Travis Ends Season 1: We know that the adult Travis was tragically murdered, and the key to understanding his fate may be linked to events set to unfold in Season 2 within the woods. We’re already aware that he narrowly avoided a fatal encounter with the girls and that his younger brother has gone missing. Could either of these scenarios be connected to his fate as an adult?

To discover the answers, there’s only one course of action — mark your calendars and tune in when “Yellowjackets” makes its anticipated return for its second season on Sunday, March 26th (with episodes streaming the preceding Friday on Showtime).
